Archive for the ‘Gum Prints’ Category

These are all of the photos from the ‘Gum Prints’ category.

These gum prints were made at Dimbola Lodge, the home of Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, where I was the first artist in residence. Gum-Bichromate printing is an old photographic process, which involves coating watercolour paper with a light-sensitive mixture of pigment, potassium dichromate & gum, and then placing it in contact with a handmade negative & exposing it to the sun. I shot the portraits at Dimbola, in the manner of Julia, & printed them in my kitchen, which was her old darkroom. I was completely absorbed in the process, and made tons of prints – the ones pictured here are sketches for my final prints which I exhibited at Dimbola.
